Core Aeration Services in Fargo-Moorhead
Healthier roots for a greener, lusher lawn.

Water pools on your lawn instead of soaking in. The grass feels hard underfoot and stays thin no matter how much you feed it. That is compacted soil, and it is everywhere in the Red River Valley because of our heavy clay. Years of mowing, foot traffic, and freeze-thaw cycles pack the dirt down tight. Roots cannot push through, so they stay shallow and weak.
Core aeration breaks that up. B&W Outdoor Services pulls small plugs of soil out across your lawn, which opens up the packed dirt. Now water, air, and nutrients reach the roots instead of running off the surface. Roots grow deeper, the grass gets stronger, and your fertilizer actually does its job. It is one of the best things you can do for a struggling lawn here.
Aeration also helps with thatch, the layer of dead material that builds up between grass and soil. The plugs we pull break down on top and help thatch decompose. In Fargo, West Fargo, Moorhead, Dilworth, and Sabin, we aerate in late summer or fall when cool-season grass is growing and can recover fast. That timing also pairs perfectly with overseeding.
We use a core aerator that pulls real plugs, not a spike machine that just pokes holes and packs soil tighter. Sixty years of working this clay taught us the difference. We are family-owned and veteran-owned. Call (701) 212-0827 to get water back into your soil.
Simple, honest, done right
- 01
Check the soil
We see how packed the soil is and where water pools. That confirms aeration is what your lawn needs.
- 02
Pull the cores
We run a core aerator across the lawn, pulling small soil plugs to open up the compacted dirt.
- 03
Leave plugs to break down
The plugs sit on top and break apart with rain and mowing, feeding the soil and thinning thatch.
- 04
Seed or feed if it fits
We often overseed or fertilize right after, since the open holes let seed and nutrients reach the roots.

Lawn Aeration Services questions
What is core aeration and why does my lawn need it?
Core aeration pulls small plugs of soil out of your lawn to relieve compaction. In the Red River Valley, heavy clay packs down hard from traffic and freeze-thaw. That keeps water, air, and nutrients from reaching the roots. Aeration opens the soil so roots grow deeper and the grass gets stronger and greener.
When should I aerate my lawn in Fargo?
Late summer to early fall is best for cool-season grass. The grass is growing and recovers quickly, and the timing lets you overseed at the same time. Spring works as a second option. We avoid the hot dry middle of summer because the lawn is already stressed and recovers more slowly then.
How often should I aerate?
Once a year is plenty for most Fargo-Moorhead lawns because of the clay soil. Lawns with heavy foot traffic or very packed dirt may benefit from it every year without fail. Lighter soils can go every other year. We check your soil and tell you honestly how often yours really needs it.
What are those plugs left on my lawn?
Those are the soil cores the aerator pulled out. Leave them. They break apart with rain and mowing over a week or two and feed the soil back. They also help break down thatch, the dead layer between grass and dirt. Raking them up wastes the benefit, so we leave them in place.
Should I overseed when I aerate?
Yes, if your lawn is thin. The holes from aeration give seed direct contact with soil, which is exactly what new grass needs to sprout. Doing both together saves a visit and gives much better results than either one alone. We often recommend the combo for thin or patchy lawns. Call (701) 212-0827.
