Overseeding Services for a Thicker Fargo Lawn

Thin grass and bare patches make a whole yard look tired. Maybe the dog wore a trail. Maybe summer heat burned out a section, or winter left dead spots when the snow pulled back. Once you have open dirt, weeds move in and the bare spots only get bigger. New grass does not just show up on its own.

Overseeding fixes that by adding fresh seed right into your existing lawn. B&W Outdoor Services spreads new cool-season seed across thin areas so young grass fills in between the older plants. The result is a denser, greener lawn that looks full instead of patchy. Thick grass also shades the soil and leaves less room for crabgrass and broadleaf weeds.

In Fargo, West Fargo, Moorhead, Dilworth, and Sabin, the best time to overseed is late summer into early fall. The soil is still warm, the nights cool off, and there is less weed pressure. New seed roots well before our hard winter hits. Seed dropped at the wrong time often dries out or gets crowded out, which wastes your money.

We pick seed that matches your lawn, usually a Kentucky bluegrass blend that handles our cold winters. We pair overseeding with aeration when the soil is packed down, so seed reaches the dirt instead of sitting on top. We are family-owned and veteran-owned with 60 years here. How it works

Simple, honest, done right

  1. 01

    Look at the thin spots

We check where the lawn is bare or thin and figure out why. That guides the seed and the prep.

  2. 02

    Prep the soil

We often core aerate first so seed drops into open holes and touches real dirt, not thatch on top.

  3. 03

    Spread the seed

We apply a cool-season blend matched to your lawn, focusing on thin areas and spreading evenly.

  4. 04

    Set up for growth

We tell you exactly how to water the new seed so it sprouts and roots before winter.

Overseeding Services questions

When is the best time to overseed in Fargo?

Late August through September is the sweet spot. The soil is still warm enough for seed to sprout fast, the nights are cooler, and there are fewer weeds competing. That gives new grass time to root before our hard winter. Spring works too but faces more weed pressure and a shorter runway before summer heat.

Do I need to aerate before overseeding?

If your soil is packed down, which is common in the Red River Valley clay, yes. Core aeration opens holes so seed lands on bare soil and roots take hold. Seed scattered on top of thatch often dries out and never sprouts. We usually do both together because they work much better as a pair.

How long until the new grass fills in?

You will see sprouts in one to three weeks if it is watered right. Real thickening takes a full season as the new plants mature and spread. Bare spots fill in first, then the whole lawn looks denser. A second overseeding the next fall pushes it even further if the lawn was very thin.

How do I water new seed?

Keep the top inch of soil damp with short, light waterings once or twice a day until the seed sprouts. Then water less often but deeper to push roots down. The biggest mistake is letting fresh seed dry out, which kills it fast. We give you a simple watering schedule for your yard.

What seed do you use here?

Usually a Kentucky bluegrass blend, often mixed with fine fescue or ryegrass. These cool-season grasses handle Fargo-Moorhead winters and match most existing lawns. We pick the blend based on your sun, shade, and current grass so the new growth blends in. Call (701) 212-0827 and we will match it to your lawn.
